{"id":1239,"date":"2023-02-17T11:44:30","date_gmt":"2023-02-17T11:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cottonroots.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1239"},"modified":"2024-04-19T13:28:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T13:28:08","slug":"clothing-from-flour-sacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cottonroots.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1239","title":{"rendered":"Clothing from Flour Sacks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I was talking to a group of ladies at a local sewing group and they told me all about how women used to repurpose flour sacks into dresses and clothes in the 1930\u2019s during the great depression, when money was very tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flour companies heard this was going on so they decided to start printing the flour sacks with patterns so that the clothing looked pretty.  Some of them even came printed with instructions which would then wash out.  You can read more about this and see images <a href=\"https:\/\/helensclosetpatterns.com\/2019\/10\/28\/fashion-history-feed-sack-fashion\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the clothes wore out, the fabric was reused again by being cut up and used for quilts.\u00a0 When the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> world war began cotton was rationed for soldier\u2019s uniforms so flour was packaged in paper bags and still is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Impact Trading and Cotton Roots, we manufacture aprons and we have made them for customers from coffee sacks.
